How to tell when small roof issues need a professional repair — before they turn into a leak.
Missing or damaged shingles
After every North Alabama storm, walk your property line and look for shingles or shingle fragments in the yard. Even a single missing shingle is an open path for water during the next rainstorm.
Granules in your gutters
A few granules after a hard rain is normal. Piles of granules at the bottom of your downspouts are a sign your shingles are losing their protective layer faster than they should — common on Huntsville and Madison roofs older than 15 years.
Visible flashing damage
Around chimneys, vents, and skylights, the flashing seals the gap between your shingles and the penetration. When it lifts, separates, or rusts, it's the most common leak source we find on Tennessee Valley homes.
Ceiling stains or attic moisture
Brown rings on a ceiling, damp insulation, or a musty smell in upper rooms all point to active moisture above. The source is rarely directly above the stain — water travels along rafters before dripping.
Storm-related wind damage
50+ MPH winds — common in North Alabama spring weather — break the seal strip on shingles. The shingle stays put but no longer adheres, leaving a hidden weakness for the next rain.
When to call us
Any of the above warrants a free inspection. Most issues caught early are simple, inexpensive repairs. Ignored, they become full replacements.
