The early warning signs of a roof leak — before it ruins your ceiling.
Check the attic after rain
The attic is where leaks show up first. Bring a flashlight up after a heavy rain and inspect the underside of the roof deck for water stains, dark streaks, or damp insulation.
Watch for ceiling stains
A faint yellow ring on a ceiling is the first visible sign of a leak. By the time it darkens, water has been there for weeks.
Look at exterior walls and trim
Sometimes water tracks down inside the wall and shows up on baseboards or window trim. Don't dismiss water staining away from the obvious source.
Smell test your home
A musty smell in upper rooms or hallways often means hidden moisture in the attic, even before any visible stain forms.
Inspect after every storm
Walk around the exterior. Look for shingles in the yard, bent gutters, or debris on the roof. Catching damage within days of a storm is critical for both repairs and insurance claims.
